TheatreOne presents the 20th Annual Bite of Nanaimo, Vancouver Island’s granddaddy of Food Fairs.  “The Bite” is TheatreOne’s biggest fundraiser of the year and has become Nanaimo’s unofficial “good bye to summer” event, heralding the return of a new, full season of arts, entertainment and culinary delights.
At this year’s Bite of Nanaimo, fifty cents from each ticket will be donated to the Loaves and Fishes food bank. For a sell out event of 900 people, that’s $450 for out local food bank!
Imagine sampling the fare of our region’s fine dining establishments in one evening, all under one roof. The Bite draws up to 900 people annually, making it the perfect promotional tool to showcase your culinary excellence and reach new customers.
During the event guests vote for their favourites in the following categories: Best Appetizer, Best Meat Dish, Best Seafood Dish, Best Vegetarian Dish, Best Dessert, Best Refreshment, Best Booth Design, Best Hospitality & Best Use of Local Ingredients. Winners receive trophies and are recognized in a post-event press release. Everyone receive plaques commemorating their involvement.

This year’s theme is “Picture Yourself At the Fair – From Pioneer Days To Modern Ways”.
The Fair originally started over 100 years ago and continues now as an annual event to advance the education of agriculture and showcase local farmers and 4-H clubs, bringing agricultural awareness to our community. As farming changes and land becomes more urban, we need to keep our farms alive, to provide top quality products and to encourage the education of the past, present and future of all areas of agriculture. Although some professionals show at Fairs, it is the children that most impress the fairgoers. Bright eyed children and animals are a winning combination. We take a step back to celebrate the simple, but important things in life.
Our country Fair is more than just entertainment. The one value we truly exhibit is Family. At our Fair, everyone of every age can participate. From displaying jams, jellies and livestock to showing heirloom quilts, artwork, pumpkins, prize flowers, home grown zucchini, fresh baked cookies and pies. Many painstaking but loving hours, go into every item and animal on display, with the hopes of encouraging others to learn different crafts and skills and to especially excite beginners to try new things that can enhance their life skills and self-sufficiency. Our Fair is a place to come with family and friends, a place to have fun and honour accomplishments. Our entry fees are kept very low, as is the prize money. The intent has never been to make the winners rich by having or making the best, the biggest or the most expensive entry, but to enjoy the variety of talents and efforts put forth by our neighbours and to honour accomplishments.
Our Fair is presented each year by a core group of hard working volunteers, who donate many hundreds of hours to carefully organize this annual 3 day event. Many community minded corporate sponsors lend or donate countless services, too numerous to mention. The Fair would like to thank all of these supporters in the community for their efforts, be it financial, material, hard work, time or effort. With your kind generosity, we are excited to welcome you back this year.
We wish all exhibitors the best luck with your entries and extend an invitation to everyone to come to our Fair, view the many animals, exhibits and shows, to relax and just have fun!

Nanaimo harbor was the scene of a bathtub race extravaganza at the first race in 1967 Canadas’ 100 birthday and its’ Centennial year.. As the City of Nanaimo’s “Centennial Event” that year, close to 200 tubbers (in every type of craft imaginable) entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the 36 mile course to Vancouver’s Fisherman’s Cove across the straits of Georgia.
Now the “Great RACE” finishes at Departure Bay in Nanaimo covering a very grueling course that leaves Nanaimo harbor circles Entrance Island and then up to and around Winchelsea Island and then back to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. In the early days it was indeed a challenge to just get past the starting line in the choppy confusion caused by an extra 785 small and large observation and escort boat in Nanaimo harbor.
From the confusion of a first time bathtub race 46 years ago, the Nanaimo to Nanaimo “Great” INTERNATIONAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BATHTUB RACE & 4 day Nanaimo Marine Festival has evolved. Where once a select band of tubbers were the highlight they now share the spotlight with many other land and water events which are interesting and often spectacular to watch.

The 2012 Save On Foods Nanaimo Dragonboat Festival promises to be the best and biggest ever – more teams, more festivities and more to celebrate in the 2012 version of Nanaimo’s most popular summer event.
Teams from all over BC and the US will take part in the 10th annual Save On Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival — a weekend of competition, camaraderie and celebration on Nanaimo’s waterfront. The event is made that much more meaningful to the community because its purpose is to create awareness and raise money for the fight against cancer locally.
Recognized as Nanaimo’s most spectacular summer festival, the Save On Foods Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival will be a true celebration of our diverse and beautiful city, attracting over 30,000 people and more than 80 dragon boat teams from across North America. The 10th annual Festival takes place July 6-8, 2012.
Beginning on Friday afternoon with the colourful Awakening of the Dragon Ceremony and Chinese Lion Dance, the Festival will continue with two more days of non-stop entertainment on the Main Stage, fabulous food and shopping, and of course, Dragon Boat racing of the highest calibre.
Admission is free to the general public so what’s stopping you? Come on down to the waters of Nanaimo Harbour and celebrate with us!
This is truly Nanaimo’s finest festival….paddlers united in the fight to beat cancer.
The Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society is unique as it donates 100% of the net proceeds to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation to assist in improving the diagnostic-treatment process of breast cancer patients. Since 2003, nearly $500,000 has been raised to purchase diagnostic equipment at NRGH.

Innkeepers take a holiday


Did you ever wonder where B&B Innkeepers go to get away from it all?    They go to other B&Bs!  Even though we have to tie them to their chair so they don’t clear the table after breakfast, we love when our fellow innkeepers come for a visit. Gary and Judy came to Nanaimo for a couple of days for a getaway.   Gary is always on the water with his boat taking kayakers to the Broken Island group but when I ask him if he wanted a Sea Doo ride around the lake, he said yes and thoroughly enjoyed the tour.  There is always something wonderful to experience in every different B&B. We enjoyed sitting on their deck watching the waves crash , the otters enjoying the surf, and fresh crab and wine to top off the scene.  Ask Judy about the Wild Pacific Trail – one not to miss for sure.

A Funny Thing written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart is a story that tells of a young slave named Pseudolus. His comedic world is set in Ancient Rome, where slaves were fashionable, virgins were regarded as objects to be conquered, and Eunuchs were in abundance. In a desperate attempt to earn his freedom, Pseudolus aids in his young master Hero’s endeavour to woo the girl of his dreams, Phillia. As our lead journeys through classical farce elements, gets the door slammed in his face and nearly has his identity mistaken, A Funny Thing will have VIU audiences laughing in this off-the-wall and hilarious musical!                 Information courtesy of

The 20th anniversary of The Island Fantasy Ball is in May 2012 in Nanaimo BC . It features the undefeated champions, Zillion Wong & Sarah Liang, who won the Standard BC Closed Championship from 2005-2011 against all comers but have now retired from amateur competition. Heroic deeds told through words and music

Stories of heroes and heroines unfold through words and music as the Vancouver Island Symphony, under the baton of the dynamic Pierre Simard, and with Bill Robinson as MC, presents Heroes Forever, on Saturday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Port Theatre.
“We are linking classical music to the people in this community, really relating it and making it an experience!” explains Simard. “Heroes Forever is a continuation of our concert two years ago honouring local heroes, firemen, Coast Guard Auxiliary, paramedics and RCMP.”  Owner of Long Lake Waterfront Bed and Breakfast, Gordie Robinson, is Station Leader of Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary 27 and will be honored at this event.

The Music
A story of courage is told in each piece of music, from the very opening note of Beethoven’s stirring ‘Egmont’, through Elgar’s gripping ‘Nimrod’, Schubert’s lively ‘Marche Militaire’ and Dvorak’s joyful inspiration ‘A Hero’s Song’, to the very last note of Beethoven’s powerful and triumphant ‘Symphony No. 5’. “This is music that moves our very being, that really speaks to the positive side of being human,” adds Simard.

Composer as Hero
And each of the composers has their own heroic story, like Beethoven who was heavily influenced by the political and social tensions of the French Revolution. He turned the world of music on its ear while waging a life struggle with the loss of his own hearing.

Music as Hero – Symphony Idol
Beethoven is the people’s choice as the 2011 Symphony Idol. His ‘Symphony No. 5’, with ‘fate knocking at the door’, reveals his true intimate thoughts, secret sorrows, pent-up rage, dreams and bursts of enthusiasm; the four opening notes are now familiar around the world as the ‘fate rhythm’.

A Local Hero
It takes courage to step up onto the stage to conduct the VI Symphony when you have no previous experience. A local lawyer, successful bidder in the 2011 Symphony Sizzle auction, will be surprising many as he steps up to the podium with his own baton for Schubert’s ‘Marche Militaire’  – but only after a few lessons and a short rehearsal with Maestro Simard.

A Tribute to the Community
And while honouring local heroes, the VI Symphony also presents this concert as a tribute to the heroics of the community at large, the supporters, organizers, managers, volunteers, board members, musicians, technicians and audience who have helped make this orchestra the jewel that it is, so that music can continue to be presented – LIVE.
